How We Check Prices
A price is only useful if you know where it came from and how old it is. This page explains how prices get onto this site and how we handle the times when something goes wrong.
The checks every price goes through
- Sane range. Each product has a minimum and maximum. A price outside it is rejected.
- Big jumps need a person. A price far from the previous day's is stopped until someone confirms it, which catches typing errors such as an extra zero.
- Dates must make sense. Future dates are rejected. An older price goes into the history and never replaces a newer one.
When a price is old
Each source has a time limit that fits how often it publishes. Past that limit, or if an update fails, we keep the last checked price and mark it "may be out of date" with its real date. We never change the date to make a price look current.
What "change" means
The change shown beside a price compares it with the last earlier day we have a price for. Where we have no earlier price, we say so.
Corrections
If you think a price is wrong, please report it. We compare reports with the source and record every change we make.
What we do not do
We do not sell gold, fuel or produce, and these prices are not offers. Prices at shops and pumps can differ. See our disclaimer.
Where prices come from
Gold API, with the European Central Bank exchange rate
The international spot price per troy ounce, converted to rupees at the latest European Central Bank exchange rate and scaled to each purity. It is a world price, not an Indian market rate: Indian rates are usually higher because of import duty, taxes and dealer premiums.

Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), Government of India
Daily retail selling prices of petrol and diesel in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, published by PPAC under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. We read them from a public file that copies the daily PPAC sheet. Other cities differ, mainly because of state VAT.

TGK Agro price feed (AGMARKNET mandi modal prices)
All-India wholesale modal prices for pulses and rice, compiled from AGMARKNET mandi reports by TGK Agro. We convert rupees per quintal to rupees per kg. These are wholesale prices: shops charge more to cover transport, spoilage and margin.
