PM Ujjwala Yojana: LPG Connections for Eligible Households

What the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana offers, who it is meant for, what documents are usually needed, and where to apply through official channels.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a Government of India scheme launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Its aim is to bring clean cooking fuel to poor households, replacing firewood, coal and dung cakes, which harm health through indoor smoke.

What the scheme offers

PMUY provides a deposit-free LPG connection to eligible households. A targeted subsidy on domestic LPG refills has also been offered to beneficiaries, with the amount and number of refills set by the government from time to time. Check the official site or your distributor for the current terms.

Who it is for

The scheme is meant for an adult woman from a poor household that does not already have an LPG connection. Eligible categories have been widened over the years to cover groups such as SC and ST households, forest dwellers, tea garden tribes and others. Eligibility rules can change, so confirm yours at the official site.

Documents usually needed

Applicants are generally asked for:

  • Aadhaar card
  • A ration card or other document showing family composition
  • Bank account details
  • A declaration in the prescribed form

Migrant families have been allowed a self-declaration in some cases. The official application lists the current requirements.

How to apply

You can apply online through the official PMUY portal or at the nearest LPG distributor of Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum or Hindustan Petroleum. There is no need to pay an agent. Be careful of websites and callers that ask for money to process an application.

How it affects your cost

The refill price you pay depends on the current listed price and any subsidy that applies to you. Our guide on how LPG cylinder prices work explains this, and the LPG and CNG price page shows the latest listed rates.
