PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme launched in February 2024 to help households install rooftop solar. Its stated aim is to give participating households up to 300 units of free electricity per month through solar generation.
How the subsidy works
The central subsidy is linked to the size of the system. When the scheme was launched, the subsidy was announced as:
| System size | Central subsidy at launch |
|---|---|
| Up to 2 kW | Rs 30,000 per kW |
| 2 kW to 3 kW | Rs 18,000 for each extra kW |
| Above 3 kW | Capped at Rs 78,000 in total |
Some states add their own support, and special rates can apply in certain regions. Check the official portal for current figures.
Who can apply
The scheme is for residential consumers with a suitable roof and a grid electricity connection in their own name. The household should not already have availed of a solar subsidy for the same system.
How to apply
- Register on the official portal with your state, utility and consumer number.
- Apply for rooftop solar and wait for your utility's feasibility approval.
- Get the system installed by a registered vendor.
- After inspection and net meter installation, submit the details for the subsidy, which is sent to your bank account.
Loans for rooftop solar may also be available through banks. Compare terms before you borrow.
