How this calculator works
- Fuel needed = distance / mileage.
- Total cost = fuel needed x price per litre.
- Cost per person = total cost / number of people.
Example
A 500 km trip in a car that gives 15 km per litre uses about 33.3 litres. At Rs 100 per litre, that is about Rs 3,333 in fuel, or Rs 6.67 per km. Shared between four people, it comes to about Rs 833 each.
Getting an honest mileage number
The figure in a car's brochure is measured under test conditions, and real-world mileage is usually lower. To find yours, fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, and fill up again. Divide the kilometres driven by the litres you added. Highway driving usually gives better mileage than city traffic, and a full load or the air conditioner can lower it.
Fuel is only part of a trip's cost. Add tolls, parking and wear on the car if you are comparing driving with a train or a flight. To understand why fuel costs more in some states, read why petrol and diesel prices differ by city.
